The Shed Challenge: What Your Extension Shed Is Telling You & Why You Should Care
“Can I see my shed?”
That’s it. Four words. And the answer — or the reaction you get when you ask — is going to tell you everything you need to know about what’s actually been happening to your hair.
The most informed extension wearers ask questions. Are you one of them?
First, What Even Is “The Shed”?
When your extensions are removed at a move-up appointment, the hair that has naturally shed from your scalp that’s freed when the extensions are removed. We call this the shed.
Here’s the thing — shedding is completely normal. You can potentionally lose anywhere from 50 to 100 hairs a day naturally. So after 8 to 10 weeks of extensions, that shed accumulates and comes out all at once during your removal. It looks like a lot. It’s usually not a problem. But it can be — and knowing the difference is everything.
Healthy shed looks like individual hairs. Loose. Clean. Not tangled around the weft, not matted, not pulling other hair with it, and minimal amount.
What you don’t want to see? Clumps. Breakage. Bald spots. Hair that snaps instead of releases. Tangles so tight it takes real effort to separate them. That’s not normal shedding — that’s your hair telling you something went wrong during the install.
Why I’m Challenging You to Ask
Here’s the honest truth: most clients have no idea what’s happening to their hair under those wefts. You go in, the stylist does the removal, reinstalls, and sends you on your way. You leave feeling great. But did anyone show you what came out? Did anyone talk you through what they saw?
If the answer is no — I want you to ask next time. Specifically, I want you to say: “Can you show me my shed before you throw it away?”
A stylist who is confident in their work will have zero problem with that question. They’ll walk you through it. They’ll tell you what they’re seeing and what it means. They’ll explain whether it looks healthy or whether something needs to change.
If that question makes your stylist uncomfortable? That’s your answer right there.
What Invisible Bead Extensions® Have to Do With It
I’m an Invisible Bead Extensions® — IBE® — certified stylist, and I’ll tell you exactly why this issue keeps coming up when we talk about healthy extensions.
The shed challenge is really about one thing: tension. Excessive, unhealthy shed — breakage, matting, clumping — almost always comes back to too much tension on the hair. Beads placed too close to the scalp. Too much hair threaded through a single bead. An install that puts stress on the same spot week after week.
IBE® was specifically engineered to eliminate that. The beads never sit on the scalp. The wefts lay flat and flush without pulling the hair in an unnatural direction. There’s no over-direction. There’s no chronic stress on the same section of hair. Clients sit in my chair and tell me they can’t feel them — and that’s not an accident. That’s the method working exactly the way it’s supposed to.
When your install is right, your shed is clean. It’s that simple.
What Happens at a Move-Up at Adriana Hill Salon
I want you to know exactly what to expect when you come in — because transparency is the whole point.
Every bead gets removed. Every single one. No sliding, no reusing, no guessing what’s going on under the weft. We cut the thread, take everything out, and I look at what came with it.
Then I’m checking your scalp. I’m checking your natural hair. I’m tracking where we’ve been placing and whether we need to shift. And yes — I can show you your shed. I want you to see it. I want you to understand what healthy looks like so you have a reference point, because that knowledge protects you no matter where you go.
That’s the standard. That should be everyone’s standard. And the fact that it isn’t is exactly why I started the Shed Challenge in the first place.
Your Challenge, Right Now
If you’re wearing extensions — any method, anywhere — I want you to do one thing at your next appointment.
Ask to see your shed.
If what comes out looks minimal, clean and healthy, great. You’re in good hands. If it doesn’t — if there’s breakage, if there’s matting, if your stylist doesn’t even know what you’re asking — it’s time to ask some harder questions about whether your current method is actually protecting your hair.
You deserve to know what’s happening to your hair. You deserve a stylist who can show you — and explain it.
And if you’re ready to experience what healthy extensions actually feel like, I’d love to show you. Come in for a consultation. We have a mannequin in the salon so you can see and feel the IBE® difference before you commit to a single thing.
Your hair is worth it. Let’s prove it.
